A Pair of Sandal selected for German festival
10 March, 2018
A documentary short film titled 'A pair of Sandal' from Bangladesh, directed by independent filmmaker and freelancer journalist Josim Ahmed, has been selected to Germany's Independent Days International Film Festival.
The film is based on the plight of Rohingya refugees currently taking shelter in Ukhia, Cox's Bazar after facing brutal oppression from Myanmar's Army. "A Pair of Sandal" has subtitles in Engilsh, Italian, French, Spanish and Turkish.
Written by Farid Ahmed, the four-minute documentary short film expresses the destitute of the Rohingya refugees with its striking images. The film delves into the Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh. Rohingyas were raped, tortured and killed in their land. They have been crammed on boats and are besieged between countries that do not want them.
They are among the most persecuted people in the world, who have gone to Bangladesh to save their lives. A fleeing Rohingya child showed a pair of sandals to those who did not want to see it. This also gave the film its title 'A Pair of Sandal'. There are no voiceovers or interviews in the film. The film has been entirely filmed on mobile and edited on MacBook.
This is yet another grand addition to the films growing number of golden feathers as they may be called to address the success of the film in international arena. The film will be shown in the final screening segment in The City of Karlsruhe in Germany on April 22. Twenty-two other films from Europe and America will take part in this final segment of the festival vying for contention. On the final day the Theatre Schoenberg will host the screening at 7.45pm local time. The entire festival will run from April 18 to 22.
This year nearly one-hundred and fifty films from forty-six countries are said to be taking part in the festival. This year marks the twentieth edition of the festival, which is one of the major ones in Europe particularly for its elaborate support given to striving independent filmmakers.
