Alibaba’s logistics arm bets on self-driving delivery
Cainiao Network, the smart logistics arm of Alibaba, the world’s biggest online commerce company, is testing the potential use of self-driving trucks in Beijing, according to an article in The Paper.

Alibaba is hiring more than 30 self-driving related staff for Cainiao, including driverless vision system R&D experts, driverless SLAM and navigation algorithm experts and driverless system R&D engineers.

The moves indicate that Cainiao’s new direction in smart logistics will focus on the driverless truck.

Earlier in 2016, Cainiao launched its first delivery robot to serve within residential areas. Though the delivery speed was not as fast as desired, the technology applied was technically driverless technology.

Later in 2017, the company released a larger and faster delivery robot, which already serves as a self-driving vehicle structure.
