Android 8.1 Oreo Will Soon Tell You If Your Wi-Fi Signal Is Fast Enough To Watch Videos On
24 January, 2018
Access to Wi-Fi is fast becoming the new oxygen of our digital lives. Take it away, and we wouldn't know what to do with out smartphone-obsessed life. It's safe to say we all have a burning desire for Wi-Fi access wherever we go.
And now, our Android phones will soon be able to tell us which Wi-Fi networks to connect to and which ones to avoid, based on their network speed.
According to a Google announcement, the latest update to Android 8.1 Oreo will allow your phone to display the speed of nearby open Wi-Fi networks. This will in turn allow you to connect to Wi-Fi networks that are worth connecting to in the first place.
After you download the Android 8.1 Oreo update to your smartphone, the Wi-Fi settings menu will start displaying one of four speed labels to indicate how fast the Wi-Fi network is: Very Fast, Fast, OK, or Slow.
According to Google, 'Very Fast' Wi-Fi networks will let you watch "very high-quality videos" (either Youtube or any streaming service), while just 'Fast' networks will let you watch most videos but not at highest quality.
For strictly music streaming and scrolling through your social feed, an 'OK' Wi-Fi network is good enough, and users should obviously stay away from 'Slow' Wi-Fi networks.
