Asos to stop selling silk, cashmere & mohair, but continue to sell leather & wool
London - Online fashion huge Asos is set to avoid advertising cashmere, mohair, and silk within its updated animal welfare policy but will continue to sell set and wool products.

The London-based etailer previously stop stocking products which contained feather & down, bone, shell, and teeth and has added three new animals derived elements to its policy for third-party products along with it's in-house Asos labels.

The decision comes after a recent expose in to the mohair industry in South Africa premiered by animal rights organisation PETA. Following expose, where shearers were found on film abusing angora goats while shearing them, a lot more than 140 international merchants have stopped buying items containing mohair.

"We won’t be investing in in virtually any new stock that does not participate in this policy, and can sell off through our existing determination by January 2019," verified an Asos spokesperson to FashionUnited via email. PETA's corporate division, who worked as well as Asos on its updated creature welfare insurance plan, also congratulated the store on its decision. "PETA applauds Asos because of its decision to stop selling cruelly obtained mohair along with silk, down, feathers, and cashmere," said Elisa Allen, PETA Director to FashionUnited. Although Asos has expanded its animal welfare policy to cover mohair, cashmere, silk, angora and Mongolian lamb fur, it still will continue steadily to source natural leather, wool, and additional animal hair as long as it is a by-product of the meat industry and is from suppliers 'with very good animal husbandry.'
