Best toilet paper in the world? Answer: The Pakistan national flag
19 February, 2019
If you do happen to be on Google and quiz it on what’s the best toilet paper in the world? Your answer surprisingly won’t be one of the top toilet paper brands such as Charmin Ultra Strong or Angel Soft Toilet Paper. Shockingly, the top result on the world’s largest search engine is the Pakistan national flag. Google was reportedly showing up the Pakistan national flag as a search result for the best toilet paper.
As per a report by USA Today, the reason for this result popping up on Google is likely due to the Valentine’s Day terror bombing in the Pulwama district of Kashmir that led to the deaths of 41 soldiers in a parliamentary convoy, which so happens to be the deadliest attack against Indian government personnel in the region’s history.
As per the report, “The Pakistani militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility, the Greater Kashmir newspaper reported, and India Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised “a crushing response.” About 70,000 people have been killed since 1989 in Kashmir, divided between India and Pakistan and claimed by both in its entirety. The 2018 death toll was the highest in nine years, with at 260 militants, 160 civilians and 150 government forces killed.”
This isn’t the first time a glitch has been observed on Google. Last year, when the term "idiot" was searched, the face of US President Donald Trump appeared.
Update: In an official statement to USA Today, Google said, “While we continue to investigate the matter, we have not found any evidence that Google Images was ranking the Pakistani flag in response to this particular search. Many news outlets wrote about an old screenshot from a meme website that is inconsistent with our UI and dates back to 2017, and we have not seen any independent verification that these results ever appeared as depicted. Since these news stories published, images from those articles are now ranking for this query, as the pages contain words relevant to the search.”
