BMW in Massive Recall Over Combustible Engines
BMW has decided to recall models whose engine caught fire recently, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Thursday.

Some 106,317 cars sold between March 2011 and November 2016 will be recalled, half the 212,383 BMWs sold here during that period.

BMW blamed the exhaust gas recirculation module for the spontaneous fires and has decided to recall all cars with the module. The ERG is an essential component of diesel cars and recirculates part of the exhaust to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

Firefighters douse a burning BMW in Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province on July 15.
The Korea Transportation Safety Authority has been conducting its own investigation since July 16.

"We've discussed early recalls with BMW to dispel fears of consumers, and BMW accepted," a ministry official said. "We're going to monitor the recall process and sometimes make unannounced visits."

BMW also decided to conduct safety checks at four official service centers across the country starting Friday, which will be expanded to all 61 service centers by the end of this month.
