Convenience-Store Jobs Dwindle Fast

The steep increase in the minimum wage caused 42,000 full-time jobs in convenience stores to disappear in 2018 as they were unable to pay the increased salaries, the Korea Association of Convenience Store Industry said Tuesday.
According to the association, the average number of jobs available per convenience store plummeted to five, down from 5.8 in 2017. The number of full-time staff who worked more than three to four days per week and received monthly wages fell from 2.3 to 1.1.
Assuming there are 38,500 convenience stores nationwide, that means more than 42,000 full-time jobs disappeared.
In contrast, the number of part-time workers increased from 128,884 to 149,958 over the same period. The total number of full-time and part-time workers in convenience stores fell by 21,324.
One industry insider said, "Due to the sharp increase in the minimum wage, convenience stores cut down on the number of full-time workers, while increasing the number of part-time staff, resulting in a deteriorating quality of employment."
