Detention of Huawei CEO sparks strong protest from China
Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng on Sunday urgently summoned US Ambassador to China Terry Branstad to make a solemn representation and “strong protests” against the detention of a top executive of leading Chinese tech giant Huawei in Vancouver, Xinhua news agency reported.

Le pointed out that the actions of the US have seriously violated the legitimate rights and interests of a Chinese citizen and are extremely vile in nature.

China resolutely opposes this and urges the US to attach great importance to China’s solemn stance and immediately take measures to correct wrong practices and withdraw the arrest warrant against a Chinese citizen, Le said.

China will take further action based on US actions, according to Le.

Chief Financial Officer Meng Wanzhou was arrested by Canadian authorities at the request of the US and is being held in Vancouver. Meng faces extradition to the US where she could face up to 30 years in prison if convicted.

Meng is reportedly suspected of trying to evade US trade sanctions on Iran.
