England bet Germany 2-0 to Euro 2020 quarters
30 June, 2021
England claimed their first win over Germany at a major tournament since 1966 after registering a 2-0 win in the round of 16 at EURO 2020.
Harry Maguire retained his spot in the Three Lions line-up alongside John Stones while Jack Grealish dropped out at the expense of the returning Keiran Trippier.
The Germans enjoyed most of the possession from the onset, but it was England who had the first sight at goal as Raheem Sterling saw his effort from distance saved by Manuel Neuer.
England also looked a threat on dead-ball situations, with Harry Maguire getting on the end of a corner before seeing header saved by Neuer while he headed another wide of the mark on 27 minutes.
Germany should have gone ahead five minutes later when Timo Werner was slipped through on goal by Kai Havertz, but the Chelsea man was denied by the on-rushing Jordan Pickford.
Pickford was called upon shortly after the break to tip Havertz stinging effort over the crossbar after the England defence failed to deal with Robin Goses' cross into the box.
With the game still level pegging with 20 minutes to go, the Germans withdrew Werner for Serge Gnabry while England introduced Grealish for Bukayo Saka.
England got their reward not long after when Grealish moved the ball onto Luke Shaw who sent a cross into the box where Sterling was on hand to score his third goal of the tournament on 75 minutes.
Muller should've levelled matters minutes later after being sent clear on goal with only Pickford to beat, but the 2014 World Cup sent his wide of the mark and they were made to pay in the 86th minute when Harry Kane headed home Grealish's cross to send England to the quarter-finals.
