Expensive Porsches Had Huge Recall Rate This Year
Porsche recalled 7,000 cars in Korea from January to July this year, or 26 percent of the 27,000 cars it sold here. The German luxury automaker's cars cost more than W100 million (US$1=W1,214).

During the same period only one in 100 domestic cars were recalled according to analysis by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport released Tuesday.

Porsche issued no fewer than seven recalls in the first seven months this year. The worst-affected were the Cayenne SUV priced around W100 million and the four-seater Panamera sports sedan costing over W2 million.

The Panamera was recalled in March due to a software error that may not warn drivers of worn-out brake pads, in April due to a faulty electrical system, in May over concerns about an air-conditioning fan that could cause a fire, and this month due to faulty transmission components.

BMW was the only foreign carmaker with a higher recall rate, fixing 290,000 or 60 percent of 480,000 cars sold in Korea due to a series of fires caused by faulty parts last year.

Mercedes-Benz had a recall rate of 16 percent and Ferrari of nine percent. Audi and Volkswagen had three percent, but the rate was only so low because they had already issued massive recalls after an emissions-rigging scandal last year.

Domestic cars had much lower recall rates. GM Korea recalled 190,000 out of the 1.67 million cars it has sold here or 11 percent. Hyundai, Kia, Ssangyong and Renault Samsung had recall rates below one percent.

But fewer recalls do not necessarily mean that domestic cars are better, only that Koreans who bought foreign cars experienced more inconvenience in trying to get them fixed because there are fewer service centers.
