Facebook says risk to US democracy resulted in ban on Donald Trump
12 January, 2021
US President Donald Trump's Facebook profile was suspended as a result of the threat to US democracy, the social mass media giant's chief operating officer said.
Sheryl Sandberg said there have been no plans to lift the indefinite ban on the departing president, which will last in least until this month's inauguration of his successor, Joe Biden.
The proceed to stop Mr Trump posting on Facebook came after the storming of the US Capitol by his supporters the other day, following his unfounded claims of electoral fraud.
But some have also accused social media systems of restricting freedom of speech by banning Mr Trump.
"We have clearly established principles that tell you you cannot demand violence," Ms Sandberg advised the Reuters Next conference.
She said posts that were doing so were taken down immediately.
"In this point in time, the risk to your democracy was too big," Ms Sandberg said.
"We felt we'd to take the unprecedented step of what is an indefinite ban. And I'm happy we did."
Facebook hasn't followed Twitter found in banning Mr Trump permanently, at least for the present time, but it has no plans to lift up the suspension soon.
Ms Sandberg said the platform had clamped straight down on articles, such as those linked to the far-ideal group QAnon, that agitated for violence found in the lead-up to the protests prior to the storming of the Capitol.
She said many events were organised on the subject of different social media platforms that did not have the same regulation as Facebook.
