Facebook Security Breach Affects 35,000 Korean Users

Some 34,891 Korean Facebook accounts were hacked in the latest security breach in the global social network in September.

The Korea Communications Commission said Sunday, "Facebook informed us of the damage done to Korean users. We will review the incident carefully and take punitive measures under Korean data laws."

The security breach affected 29 million accounts worldwide, fewer than the 50 million initially feared. Hackers stole e-mail addresses, phone numbers and credit card numbers as well as other data such as religion, friends networks and information on the devices they use.

Facebook says the hackers breached security through its access tokens, which subscribers can also to sign in to other websites with the "sign in with Facebook" option. The company says it immediately disabled the access tokens of affected users and thereby signed them out automatically, but experts have warned that using the option at all is unsafe.
