Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong jailed for 10 months over Tiananmen vigil

Hong Kong activist Joshua Wong will face another 10 months in jail for taking part in an unauthorised assembly on Jun 4, 2020, to commemorate the 1989 crackdown on protesters around Beijing's Tiananmen Square.
It was the 1st time the vigil was banned in the global financial hub, with law enforcement citing COVID-19 restrictions on group gatherings, since it did for all demonstrations this past year. It is likely to face an identical fate this year.
Still, tens of thousands of folks lit candles throughout the city in what was largely a peaceful event last June, bar a brief skirmish with riot police in a single neighbourhood.
Commemorations of the Tiananmen crackdown are actually banned found in mainland China, but Hong Kong traditionally held the major vigils globally every year, having been promised certain freedoms when it all returned to Chinese guideline in 1997, including privileges of expression and assembly.
Wong, 24, already on prison as a result of other illegitimate assembly convictions and among 47 activists charged beneath the city's sweeping national protection law, was sentenced on the District Courtroom on Thursday (May 6).

Judge Stanley Chan also sentenced Lester Shum, Jannelle Leung and Tiffany Yuen to between several and six months found in jail. Twenty others facing comparable Tiananmen Square anniversary expenses from last June are due to appear in court on Jun 11.
"Freedom of assembly isn't unlimited," Chan said.
The anniversary struck a particularly sensitive nerve in the former British colony last year, falling just as Beijing ready to introduce innovative security legislation which punishes anything China sees as subversion, secession, terrorism or collusion with foreign forces with up alive in prison.
This year, the Jun 4 Tiananmen Square anniversary event is specially awkward for Beijing, which celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Communist Party.
When asked whether commemorating the victims of Tiananmen would violate the new security legislation, Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam last month said that it was important to display respect to the Get together.
China hasn't provided a complete account of the 1989 Tiananmen Square violence. The loss of life toll distributed by officials was about 300, the majority of them soldiers, but rights organizations and witnesses declare thousands of people may have died.
Wong was presented with a 13-and-a-half-month sentence last December more than an unlawful anti-authorities rally on Jun 21, 2019, and yet another four-month sentence for taking part in an unauthorised protest found in October 2019 while as well breaking a government regulation against wearing deal with masks.
While found in prison, Wong was arrested found in January about suspicion of breaking the new security law, that was introduced in July 2020, by firmly taking part within an unofficial vote to choose opposition applicants for a since-postponed election, which authorities describe mainly because a "vicious plot" to "overthrow" the government.
