Huawei puts lid on rice rumor

Chinese phone manufacturer Huawei has issued a statement denying there is any substance to a rumor circulating online that it is planning to become a rice producer, The Paper reported.
According to the rumor, Huawei is involved in a rice-growing venture with Yuan Longping’s company. Yuan has been known as “the father of rice” since he developed the first hybrid varieties in the 1970s.
Huawei said that in the past few years, the company has provided information and communications technology to digitalize land use, help to improve saline soil, and promote the development of smart agriculture supported by the Internet of Things, big data and mobile internet.
Huawei positions itself as a technology provider and digital enabler. The company will not enter industries where it does not have an advantage, the statement said.
