Hundreds of British vacationers sneak out of Swiss ski holiday resort under cover of night
28 December, 2020
Hundreds of British travelers forced into quarantine found in the Swiss ski holiday resort of Verbier fled in the night rather than seeing their holidays get downhill, the local municipality said on Sunday.
About 200 of the 420 or so damaged British tourists in the blissful luxury Alpine ski station still left beneath the cover of darkness, the SonntagsZeitung newspaper reported.
Switzerland's ski resorts had been place to boom with snow-seeking British tourists, but a flight ban as a result of new Covid-19 variant raging in England place those plans on ice.
The drastic ruling by the Swiss government also included a 10-time retroactive quarantine for anyone who arrived from Britain since December 14, after the discovery of a new variant of the coronavirus, which authorities fear spreads quicker.
A few of the British tourists affected in Verbier still left immediately, while others stuck it out for some time before leaving.
"Most of them stayed on quarantine for a moment before they set off unnoticed under the cover of darkness," Jean-Marc Sandoz, spokesman for the wider Bagnes municipality, told SZ.
Mr Sandoz called the complete circumstance "the worst week our community has ever experienced".
