iPhone 11 Unexpected Hit in Korea
31 October, 2019
Apple's new iPhone 11 is an unexpected hit in Korea despite being barely different from the previous model and battling powerfully territorial domestic rivals like Samsung.
As many as 140,000 iPhone 11s were sold last Friday, the first day of sales in Korea, a whopping 30 percent more than previous models. The iPhone X series sold about 100,000 units on their first day of sales. That is still not exactly a boom, but it is impressive given how the odds are stacked against it.
Industry insiders say the reasons are the high-performance cameras and long battery life. The iPhone 11 Pro Max's battery lasts 40.5 hours, the longest among all premium smartphones.
The design of the three rear cameras has been criticized here for its clumsiness since it looks like a gas cooker, but once it was launched consumers have apparently been getting used to the unsightly blobs.
So far the iPhone 11 does not support 5G, but even that is not putting consumers off.
Industry insiders point out that Apple's brand loyalty is very high because the company locks users into its own system with compatibility among various devices, so once captured a user will probably buy another iPhone next time.
