Italy's artisan producers are under threat

Italy houses scores of consultant manufacturers, from the tiniest haute couture and specialty ateliers, to high-end technology leading factories producing men’s and womenswear, sneakers and accessories, exported around the world. Italy’s fashion and extras sector is a 93 billion dollar sector, one which powers global makes like Gucci and Valentino, but also provides millions of jobs and contributes 1.5 percent of the country’s gross household product.

A lot of Italy’s artisan manufacturers have seen a downturn running a business since Covid-19, and several cannot survive. Canceled orders, unpaid invoices and plummeting revenue are more typical than exception. There are a lot more than 83,000 active trend and supplier businesses, regarding to Mediobanca, with many facing layoffs and closures.

Based on the FT, unions in Como, where 80 percent of European silk is made, say about 15,000 workers in the sector possess either been furloughed or experienced contracts terminated.

“If things don’t get back to normal within the next couple of months, the worry is that from September onwards the problem will deteriorate even more and that lots of luxury suppliers, particularly the small ones, will go bust,” David Rulli, head of fashion at business lobby Confindustria in Florence, said.

In May the Italian authorities approved a 55 billion euro stimulus package to greatly help Italy’s battered businesses survive the coronavirus crisis. Italy forecasts its market will shrink 8 percent this season, but for many trend businesses the outcome will be many worse.

The wonder of artisan work is based on the details. It's the craftsmanship of working yourself and employing age-old tactics that can't be replicated by big industrial devices and factories. If these artisans will be pressured to close their businesses, it'll be devasting for the sector and the environment.
