Leaked Samsung Galaxy S9 Feature Suggest It May Be Better Than iPhone X & Google Pixel 2XL
17 January, 2018
Initial rumours indicated Samsung’s next flagship, the Galaxy S9, would debut at CES 2018 earlier this month. Now we know it’s more likely to launch at MWC 2018, and we’re already seeing a leak that details what the phone's hardware setup is going to be like.
Reddit user minhvn broadcast the secret a few days ago, with a shot of the smartphone’s packaging listing its core specifications.
The Galaxy S9 will have a 5.8-inch QHD+ (1440x2960) sAMOLED display with a dual pixel 12MP rear camera with variable a aperture of f/1.5 - f/2.4 and OIS and “Super Slo-mo”, as well as a 8MP autofocus selfie camera. It has AKG stereo speakers, is IP68 water and dust-resistant, ad supports wireless charging. The device sports 4GB RAM, 64GB internal storage, and features an Iris scanner.
The cool things here the dual pixel single lens camera, as well as the Iris scanner, but there are a few drawbacks as well. After all, 4GB of RAM is quite low for a Samsung flagship, a downgrade in fact from the Galaxy Note 8’s 6GB, as well as the disappointing 64GB internal storage. As for the battery, we’ve already heard rumours it’ll have a 3200mAh pack, and will supposedly keep the contentious headphone jack.
Best camera phone of 2018?
Another thing to note is that the variable aperture on the Galaxy S9 will likely be mechanical and not digital. The company has already launched a camera like this in the W2018 flip phone launched in China. In normal conditions, the device uses a f/2.4 aperture. In low-light, a set of miniaturized blades open up the aperture just like in a DSLR.
That, combined with the high quality slow motion could mean we're looking at a possible "best smartphone camera of 2018" here. It's certainly more than enough to give both the iPhone X and Pixel 2 XL competition, though it's likely the latter's AI-based image processing will be the tougher fight.
