Live updates: Biden picks up more key states as path to presidency widens
05 November, 2020
A day after US polls closed in a historic vote - set against the worst pandemic of the century and a global monetary crisis - the picture is now clearer as more projected results emerge.
Will President Donald Trump extend his run by another four years or will it be his Democratic rival Joe Biden who takes the most notable job?
Dozens of angry supporters of President Donald Trump converged on vote-counting centres in Detroit and Phoenix as the returns went against him on Wednesday in the two key states, while a large number of anti-Trump protesters demanding a complete tally of the ballots in the still-undecided election took to the streets in cities over the US.
“Stop the count!” the Trump supporters chanted in Detroit. “Stop the steal,” they chanted in Phoenix.
The protests came as the president insisted without evidence that there have been major issues with the voting and the ballot counting, and as Republicans filed suit in multiple states over the election.
US formally quits Paris agreement but Biden pledges return
Democrat Joe Biden vowed he'd return to the Paris accord after the United States became the first country to ever withdraw from a global climate change pact.
With vote-counting in the presidential election underway, Biden took on the tone of a president-elect and clarified that climate was a top priority.
"Today, the Trump Administration officially left the Paris Climate Agreement. And in precisely 77 days, a Biden Administration will rejoin it," tweeted Biden, who take the presidential oath on Jan 20 if elected.
Biden has proposed a US$1.7 trillion intend to take the US, the world's second biggest carbon emitter, to net zero by 2050.
Trump has aggressively championed the fossil fuel industry, questioned the science of climate change and weakened other environmental protections.
