Mexican women to strike for 1 day after protest against gender violence

Thousands of ladies across Mexico planned to stay home from work or school on Monday for “A Time Without Women,” time after an unprecedented amount of these filled the roads to protest rampant gender violence on International Women’s Day.
The back-to-back protests tag an intensification of the struggle by Mexican women against violence and impunity in one of the most risky countries on the globe for females. Ladies in Argentina and Chile possess staged strikes in prior years and were to take action again Monday.
“What we want to provoke is that they see that if we’re certainly not there, metropolis won’t circulate. That there are many of us. What are they going to carry out without us if they are killing us?” explained Viviana Mendez, a lawyer and mom who planned to be a part of the strike.
The idea is to be invisible for a day to ensure that coworkers, bosses, boyfriends, husbands and sometimes children think about the lack of each participating woman.
Government data say 3,825 girls met violent deaths last year, 7% more than in 2018. That works out to about 10 women slain everyday in Mexico. Hundreds more have gone lacking without a trace recently. Authorities seem incapable of preventing or correctly investigating the crimes, hardly any of which cause convictions.
“Found in Mexico it’s like we’re in a state of battle; we’re in a humanitarian crisis due to the number of women that contain disappeared or been killed,” said Maria de la Luz Estrada, coordinator of the National Citizen’s Observatory of Femicide.
A Facebook group called “A good Day Without Ladies” has more than 320,000 Mexican participants who debate and inform one another about the possible implications of not likely to any office, hospital or university for one day.
