More Banknotes Trashed Last Year Due to Coronavirus
04 February, 2021
Some W4.8 trillion worth of damaged Korean banknotes were incinerated last year, the largest amount since W50,000 notes entered circulation in '09 2009 (US$1=W1,115).
A complete of 642.6 million notes were damaged in one way or another.
The increase is basically credited to coronavirus as much mildly damaged bills were destroyed to stem the spread of the infection.
The BOK also disinfected many bills by exposing them to high temperatures after storing them for at least fourteen days.
