Open-Air Markets Can Reduce Cost of Lunar New Year's Ritual Table
It would cost 15 percent less to prepare the ancestral ritual table for Lunar New Year if groceries are bought in open-air markets instead of supermarkets, the Seoul Agro-Fisheries and Food Corporation said Tuesday.

Base on a study of prices of food products in 50 open-air markets and 25 superstores in Seoul, it said that it will cost some W188,000 to prepare an ancestral table with ingredients from traditional markets and W220,000 from superstores (US$1=W1,159).

The cost rose 5.4 percent since last year from open-air markets, but fell 1.6 percent from superstores.

Overall, prices of vegetables and seafood have risen due to a decline in yield, while fruit prices have fallen.
