Renault Samsung to Produce Small Electric Vehicle in Busan
11 December, 2018
Renault Samsung will begin producing the Twizy, a small two-seater electric car, in Busan next year, the automaker said Monday.
The news comes after the company last week said that it will cease production of the Nissan Rogue SUV at its Busan plant in September next year.
The Twizy is currently being manufactured in Valladolid, Spain, and Renault Samsung has been importing assembled models for sale in Korea. It has had difficulty boosting sales here due to inconvenient parts supply.
Renault Samsung plans to produce 5,000 Twizy cars per year in Busan for sale in Korea and in other parts of Asia. Those manufactured in Busan will have higher specifications than European models. It hopes to start production by March next year.
"Headquarters believes that producing the Twizy in Korea will be more efficient, as 60 percent of the cars are sold in Asia," said a staffer at Renault Samsung. "With the Twizy, we will be producing two electric models in Busan, and this could help Busan become a hub for eco-friendly car production."
