Samsung Bets on New Foldable Phones to Shore up Market Share
12 August, 2021
Samsung on Wednesday unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip 3 phones on Wednesday which represent its best hope to shore up its dwindling share of the premium smartphone market. It also rolled out a lighter and cheaper version of earphones called Galaxy Buds 2, and the new Galaxy Watch 4.
Samsung lost its top spot in global phone sales to Xiaomi in June and a sense of crisis has fallen over the company.
The new foldable phones have a range of other gimmicks such as waterproofing to attract big spenders. The company used extra-tough aluminum and reinforced glass to improve resistance.
The camera is hidden behind the screen to make it bigger, and the screen's brightness has been improved by almost 30 percent compared to the previous model.
Samsung also made the Galaxy Note Series' S Pen compatible with the Galaxy Z Fold 3 so users can take notes even while making phone calls. But the stylus is not included.
The Galaxy Z Flip 3, whose target is younger customers, is being offered in seven colors.
The price tag has been slashed but is still an eye-watering W1.99 million for the Galaxy Z Fold 3, W400,000 lower than its predecessor, while the Galaxy Z Flip 3 costs W1.25 million, also W400,000 cheaper than the previous model (US$1=W1,159).
