Samsung Shows Tease of New Foldable Smartphone
Samsung has unveiled a new foldable smartphone concept just two months after rolling out the revolutionary Galaxy Fold.

The electronics giant previewed the concept at its annual developer conference in San Jose, California on Tuesday.

Jeong Hye-soon, the head of Samsung's framework R&D group, said the Galaxy Fold "is just the beginning" of a new format that "changes the way you use your phone."

The global market for foldable handsets is starting to heat up, with Huawei planning to unveil its first foldable smartphone called Mate X on Nov. 15, while TCL, Motorola and Xiaomi are also racing to roll out their own versions.

Unlike the Galaxy Fold, which folds from right to left to offer a big-screen alternative, the new model appears to be aimed at miniaturization. The new form "will not only easily fit in your pocket, but it also changes the way you use your phone, even when you take photos and videos," Jeong said.

Samsung did not give details about the device, but it will reportedly come with a 6.7-inch screen, the same size used for the Galaxy S10, and be half of the size of ordinary handsets when folded.

"While the Galaxy Fold targets those who prefer a large screen, the new foldable phone will target those who want a smaller, more portable phone," a Samsung staffer said.

The company did not say when it hopes to start selling it, but industry watchers believe it will hit showrooms in the first half of next year. It is expected to be cheaper than the Galaxy Fold.
