Samsung to Unveil Mid-Priced Smartphone in San Francisco
12 February, 2019
Samsung plans to unveil a new mid-priced smartphone this month. Tentatively called the Galaxy S10E, the new model will be featured at a media event in San Francisco on Feb. 20.
Last year, Samsung's global smartphone sales fell below 300 million units for the first time, while its share of the Chinese handset market fell below 1 percent.
One industry insider said, "Samsung has rolled up its sleeves to gain competitiveness in the Chinese market with the release of the mid-priced model."
Industry sources said the Galaxy S10E comes with a 5.8-inch screen, which is smaller than the flagship Galaxy S10. It is expected to be priced at around US$700, a bit cheaper than the S10.
Samsung apparently aims to recover its sales volume. Its annual global sales surpassed 300 million units for the first time in 2013 and stood at that level for some five years until sales plunged to 290 million units last year.
Chinese handset maker Huawei sold 200 million smartphones last year, emerging as a major rival.
One industry source said, "Samsung needs to stay ahead of Chinese players in terms of overall sales volume, while it also needs to maintain its lead in the premium smartphone market, which yield higher profits."
