Shanghai builds $900 mil hub in force to be eSports leader

China has begun creating a $900 million center it hopes could be the envy of eSports and seal its press to make Shanghai the global capital of the fast-growing specialist gaming industry.
The Shanghai International New Cultural and Creative E-sports Center is planned for completion in 2023 and will cost at least 5.8 billion yuan, Chinese authorities and media said.
Officials in the Shanghai district residence to the center said they want it to become "a pilgrimage webpage" for eSports lovers from across the world.
Once finished it'll boast a 6,000-seater eSports venue, a good five-star eSports-themed hotel and a museum specialized in video games, Minhang district officials said.
The high-tech hub will span 500,000 square meters and "accommodate a huge selection of domestic and foreign eSports-related enterprises", the district financial development committee said following Monday's groundbreaking ceremony.
Speaking to AFP in 2018, top rated Shanghai sporting activities official Luo Wenhua explained the Chinese city "possesses proposed to become the capital of eSports".
In September-October this past year Shanghai hosted the Little league of Legends world championships, just about the most prestigious events in eSports.
Chinese team Suning shed to Southern Korea's Damwon Gaming in the ultimate in front of a lot more than 6,000 stadium spectators, bucking the trend on a year when various sports occurred behind closed doors as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
China, which has around 720 million gamers, might again web host the tournament this season.
