South Korea reports highest daily COVID-19 count in three months
South Korea on Wednesday (Apr 7) reported 668 brand-new COVID-19 cases for Tuesday, the best daily count since Jan 8 amid a growth found in cluster infections, the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Company (KDCA) said.

The new cases take the country's total infections to 106,898, with 1,756 deaths, with the latest surge centred around clusters in kindergartens, saunas, bars and churches.

More than 63 % of fresh cases were within Seoul and neighbouring regions, including Gyeonggi province, KDCA data showed.

Authorities said they would expand testing efforts to trace transmitting nationwide through epidemiological surveys and preemptive testing.

"If the fourth wave of infections turns into a reality, a good disruption to vaccination will be inevitable, as well as dealing a huge blow to our economy," Primary Minister Chung Sye-kyun told a good government meeting about Wednesday.

"The federal government is maximising efforts to avoid the fourth wave by mobilising all means likely," he said.

The country has up to now administered more than a million doses of vaccine among medical personnel and high-risk groups because the start of its inoculation drive in February, yet authorities face a backlash for counting on the global vaccine-sharing programme COVAX, which has come across delays.
