South Korea to secure coronavirus vaccines for 60% of population: PM Chung
South Korea will secure early supply of the novel coronavirus vaccines for 30 million persons, or 60 % of its population, Primary Minister Chung Sye-kyun told a good cabinet conference on Tuesday (Sep 14).

While authorities want to inoculate the country's overall population of 52 million, uncertainty around the vaccine's safe practices, efficacy and advancement was limiting South Korea's investment, Chung said.

Chung said the government might negotiate with the relevant international organisations and vaccine manufacturers to secure the first way to obtain the COVID-19 vaccines and would get more as the development proceeds.

In August, Southern Korea said it planned to join the COVAX facility, a global COVID-19 vaccine allocation plan co-led by the World Health Organization (WHO) that aims to greatly help buy and fairly distribute the shots.

South Korea will pay for 20 million doses of vaccines from the COVAX scheme, designed for 10 million persons, and 40 million doses from private drug makers, medical authorities said in a good statement.

South Korea’s SK Bioscience found in July agreed to produce AstraZeneca’s experimental vaccine, which has shown assurance against the coronavirus, to help the British organization build global supplies.

Novavax Inc previous month separately said SK Bioscience, a product of SK Chemicals, would manufacture an element of the US medicine developer's experimental coronavirus vaccine found in a bid to improve its supply.

The Korea Disease Control and Avoidance Company reported 106 new coronavirus cases as of Monday midnight, which brought the full total number of infections to 22,391, and the full total COVID-19 death tally to 367.
