Ssangyong Workers Accept 2-Year Unpaid Leave
Cash-strapped Ssangyong's labor union features acknowledged a self-rescue plan that could put around one half of the SUV maker's staff in unpaid leave for just two years.

Unionized workers at Ssangyong voted in Monday and Tuesday in the proposal with 52.1 percent of its 3,224 members in favor. A Ssangyong staffer said, "We acquired the energy to pursue an effective sale. It's superb that labor and operations have demonstrated their willingness to greatly help the business survive."

The plan carries a two-year unpaid leave for half of the carmaker's 4,800 workers, wage cuts and a halt in benefits, while management will need an additional 20-percent pay cut. Wage negotiations will become held every 3 years instead of two.

The decision offers hope that Ssangyong can locate a new buyer.

Ssangyong's court-appointed supervisor Chung Yong-won said, "Wesoon intend to present another vision to reorganize as an eco-friendly car maker. By recognizing the self-rescue method and a sales, we will build the near future path of Ssangyong."

The union said it'll try its best to set up a solid foundation for future growth.
