The Day Buckley Scored A good Brace Against Bayern
08 December, 2020
Few South African players have scored goals in Europe's top leagues, however, many 15 years back, Delron Buckley netted a brace against the mighty Bayern Munich.
Buckley, who recently acted as interim brain coach in Maritzburg United, turns 43 today. To celebrate his special day, Soccer Laduma and Deutsche Welle recall one of the ex - Bafana Bafana winger's job highlights.
On 13 February 2005, Buckley netted a brace for Arminia Bielefeld in a 3-1 make an impression on record Bundesliga champions Bayern, who had the one and only Oliver Kahn in aim at that time - the only shot-stopper to win the Golden Ball at a FIFA Community Cup to date.
Even today, Buckley still remembers positioning the ball through Kahn's legs.
"It was an extremely special day for me because all of the years I had tried to rating against Oliver Kahn without success, but that day I were able to score several," he told Sports Laduma.
"The players Bayern had at the time were amazing, that they had Michael Ballack, Claudio Pizarro, using against Arminia Bielefeld - a team that merely got promoted.
"But the way our mentor Uwe Rapolder had place the team together, he wished to play attacking football, which worked in my own favour.
"I still remember the main one goal, there was snow on the pitch. Ruediger Kauf received the duel in the midfield so when he received the ball, I started jogging in behind the defence. That was our game plan, succeed the ball in midfield and the forwards got to run.
"He won the ball in midfield and I just became popular. I didn't even look back, because I knew accurately he would take up it over the defence into space.
"Then it was me in a one-on-one versus Oliver Kahn, he arrived, opened up his legs and I pushed the ball through."
That strike was Bielefeld's second goal of the match before Lucio pulled one back for the Bavarians with a primary free-kick. However, it had been the South African who had the previous laugh after completing his brace in the 83rd minute.
