The Highest-Attended Games In World Cup History
13 May, 2020
There were some massive crowds in the stadiums at FIFA World Cups through the years, but which games in the tournament's history had the best attendance?
The highest attendance figure recorded in virtually any official football match came in the 1950 World Cup final between Brazil and Uruguay.
FIFA explained that, officially, 173 850 spectators were in the packed Maracana Stadium that day, with the recorded attendance also being recognised as a Guinness World Record. Unofficially, though, there are reports that there were, in fact, 199 854 visitors at the overall game.
Uruguay beat the host nation 2-1 in what is remembered among the biggest upsets in football history.
The Maracana Stadium registered other massive crowds for Brazil matches at the same tournament, but for the objective of this overview, only the highest-attended game at each particular World Cup was considered.
Two other games in the competition's history saw crowds greater than 100 000, while the 2010 World Cup final between Spain and holland in South Africa holds the newest attendance record at the tournament.
According to FIFA, 84 490 spectators attended that spectacle, with only regulations stopping La Furia Roja's 1-0 win from being witnessed by FNB Stadium's full capacity of 94 736.
