The Leading African International Scorers In History
Cristiano Ronaldo is the leading goalscorer of all time in international football, with Lionel Messi currently fifth in the standing. Here, however, are the top 10 African international scorers in history, a list that features only two active players.

When it comes to the beautiful game's international stage, no player has scored more goals than Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, whose 112 strikes for Portugal see him occupy first place.

His longstanding rival Messi, who joined Paris Saint-Germain in August, recently brought up his 80th strike for Argentina in a 3-0 win over Uruguay, becoming the first international player in South American history to reach that mark.

Who, though, are the leading scorers when it comes to African international football? Interestingly, Messi has only just surpassed the man who sits at the top of the ranking, Godfrey Chitalu.

The late Zambian striker remains the most lethal African goalscorer in the sport after he struck 79 times in 111 appearances for Chipolopolo between 1968 and 1980.

High-profile African superstars such as Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto'o also have their place in the ranking, although only two active internationals feature, in the form of Egypt's Mohamed Salah and Algeria's Islam Slimani.

The latter, in fact, is currently leading the way in the Confederation of African Football 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers goalscorers list, having found the back on six occasions. Salah, meanwhile, has scored 43 goals for Egypt, according to Transfermarkt.
