English Premier League
Teams: Manchester City 1-2 Manchester United
Date: 07 December 2016
Venue: Etihad
Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw returned for the Red Devils, while Pep Guardiola opted to drop Nicolas Otamendi for John Stones in the defence.
It was an explosive start to the encounter, as both Daniel James and Jesse Lingard were denied by Ederson in the opening 10 minutes of the first half.
With 20 minutes gone, the Video Assistant Referee came into play as United were awarded a penalty after Bernardo Silva brought down Rashford, who stepped up and converted the penalty to hand his side the lead.
The Etihad was silenced once again nine minutes later as Martial combined with James before firing home at Ederson's near post for the second goal.
The second goal was certainly wake-up call for the defending champions, who dominated the remainder of the second half although David de Gea was hardly tested.
Victor Lindelof came to United's rescue ten minutes into the second half with a last-ditch block to deny Kevin de Bruyne a certain goal the near post.
Pep Guardiola responded with a double change after the hour mark as Otamendi replaced Stones before Bernardo Silva made way for Riyad Mahrez minutes later.
With City throwing everything foward in the second half, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to withdraw Martial for the final 20 minutes and introduced Andreas Pereira.
The hosts did managed to pull one back with five minutes remaining as Otamendi nodded home from a corner to set up a nervous final few minutes.
