UK unites G7 to take action against democratic threats

On Tuesday, UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab provides together some of the world’s leading democracies for talks and action on the most significant global issues, at the G7 foreign and development ministers meeting in London.
The G7 involves the UK, US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the EU.
Talks will cover the situation in Libya and the war in Syria, together with relations with China and Iran.
The discussions each morning will focus on the coup in Myanmar, with Mr Raab urging G7 nations to take better action against the military junta.
He will call for more targeted sanctions against persons and entities linked to the junta, support for arms embargoes, and increased humanitarian assistance for the most vulnerable in the country.
The afternoon session covers the situation in Ethiopia, Somalia, the Sahel and the western Balkans.
The foreign ministers may also discuss Russian action including the build-up of troops on the border with Ukraine, its imprisonment of opposition figure Alexei Navalny and the problem in Belarus.
“The UK’s presidency of the G7 can be an opportunity to gather open, democratic societies and demonstrate unity at the same time when it is essential to deal with shared challenges and rising threats,” Mr Raab said.
After talks through the day, the foreign ministers will hold a dinner discussion with guest nations India, Australia, South Africa and South Korea, which year's chair of the Association of South-East Asian Nations, Brunei Darussalam.
