Us citizens march for racial justice on Juneteenth anniversary

People in america took to the streets of locations around the united states on Friday to demand racial justice on a day large with symbolism -- the Juneteenth holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
Marches and rallies were being held found in Atlanta, Chicago, LA, NY and Washington against a backdrop of weeks of protests fueled by the deaths of African Us citizens as a result of police.
In a stark illustration of the tensions roiling the country, President Donald Trump issued a solemn White House affirmation commemorating Juneteenth, while also threatening protesters on Twitter before his controversial rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday.
Juneteenth marks your day -- June 19, 1865 -- whenever a Union general arrived in Galveston, Texas and informed slaves that they were free -- 8 weeks following the Civil War had ended and two-and-a-half years just after president Abraham Lincoln had issued the Emancipation Proclamation.
The date is normally celebrated with prayer services and family gatherings, but comes this season amid a national soul-searching over America's legacy of racial injustice.

Thousands of demonstrators marched across Latest York's Brooklyn Bridge to Manhattan in Friday, chanting the names of black women and men killed by police recently.
"This year the complete country has had a good reckoning," said protester Tabatha Bernard, 38, voicing support for growing demands Juneteenth to be declared a national vacation.
"It's up to all of us to keep this going until we've change."
Protesters in Atlanta, where a police officer was first charged with murder this week for shooting a good black man found in the trunk, marched on the Georgia Status Capitol.
More gathered found in Washington outside the Lincoln Memorial and near to the White House, while thousands marched found in Chicago and danced at festive rallies in Southern Los Angeles.
Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden, who includes a solid lead more than Trump in the most recent polls, reported Juneteenth reminded Americans "our country is capable of the most detrimental violence and injustice but it addittionally has an incredible capacity to be reborn anew."
'More unity'
In Tulsa -- where Trump on Saturday is set to carry his first campaign rally because the coronavirus pandemic started out -- a Juneteenth celebration was attended by several thousand protesters.
"We've seen more unity and more blacks and whites alongside one another within the last three weeks than we've ever seen in a Trump rally," civil rights activist Al Sharpton advised a press conference.
Trump had at first scheduled his Tulsa overall look for Juneteenth but was forced to improve it amid a community outcry above his provocative selection of date and location.
The city's Greenwood district was the website of 1 of the country's worst racist massacres, in 1921, when as much as 300 black Americans were killed.
"We only want the environment to really know what happened right here," said Greenwood retailer owner Tony Williams, labelling Trump's arrival "disrespectful."
Meanwhile, about a mile away, a large number of Trump followers have camped away for several nights prior to the rally in order to get the best seats.
"This is a super important point in time for all of us... we're out here helping Trump," explained Stephen Corley, 19.
'A much different picture!'
Trump, who's facing a hardcore re-election battle found in November and provides adopted a good hardline "law and order" stance towards protestors, and Initial Woman Melania Trump issued a good joint statement to tag Juneteenth.
"Juneteenth reminds us of both unimaginable injustice of slavery and the incomparable delight that must contain attended emancipation," it explained.
"This Juneteenth, we commit, as one Country, to live true to our highest ideals and build definitely toward a freer, more powerful country that values the dignity and boundless probable of all Americans."
At the same time, Trump issued a blunt warning to counter-protesters headed to Tulsa.
"Any protesters, anarchists, agitators, looters or lowlifes who are likely to Oklahoma please understand, you won't be treated as if you have been in New York, Seattle, or perhaps Minneapolis," he said. "It'll be a much different scene!"
Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum declared a curfew in the city amid fears of violence but Trump later announced it turned out lifted for "our various supporters" going to the rally.
