Vancouver stabbing assault: one confirmed dead, kid among five wounded
A good knifeman stabbed and killed a female and wounded five others at a library found in Vancouver on Saturday, police said.

Police arrested a lone suspect but the motive for the strike had not been immediately known, said Sergeant Frank Chang of the Vancouver police.

Police said the suspect was first thought to have acted by himself.

By Saturday evening, they had not yet interrogated him and did not give his name.

"We realize - we believe we realize - the who, the what, the where and the when. It really is our job now to look for the why," said Sgt Chang.

"We haven't spoken with him but, but our suspect has already established police interactions previously. He provides a past criminal history," Sgt Chang advised reporters at the picture of the crime.

The stabbings occurred in the afternoon in and near to the library within an upscale neighborhood of the Pacific coast city.

CTV broadcast a video recording apparently showing the arrest of the suspect, who appeared to stab himself in the leg before collapsing and being detained by several cops.

Witness Sheila Dyson told CTV she saw a man stab a woman. There did not seem to be any interconnection between them, with the attacker showing up to hit randomly, she said.

Andrew Cocking, who lives 500 metres from the library, told AFP the area where the attack took place was generally very quiet.

"I saw people receiving tended to by paramedics, these were being given medical next to a car or truck and also next to a restaurant, and pulled apart on stretchers," he said.

"It was quite sad, specifically because apparently one of these was a kid," he explained, adding that his father was at the library simply just thirty minutes before the attack.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted his condolences to those damaged, saying: "My heart is in North Vancouver tonight."
