Vietnamese woman jailed 5 years for selling son’s wife

A 54-year-old Vietnamese woman from Ngh? An province was sentenced to five years in jail on Wednesday after being found guilty of selling her son’s wife in October, 2016.
Vi Thi Que was found guilty of trafficking her 23-year-old daughter-in-law as a bride for a Chinese man in China, VN Express reported.
Relatives Vi Van Tuong and Vi Thi Tuyet were also jailed for five and six years respectively. The trio was also ordered to pay the victim VND76 million (US$3,270) in compensation.
Court documents indicate that the two relatives asked Que to get a young girl they could sell as a bride to China.
The accused manipulated her daughter-in-law’s need for money to care for her paternal family and took her to China through the Quang Ninh Province border for a “well-paid job.”
The daughter-in-law was sold to a Chinese farmer for VND300 million, from which Que took VND80 million as commission.
However, after being trafficked, the victim — with the help of the Blue Dragon NGO — managed to return home home and was reunited with her family on March 9, this year.
In a previous media report, 32 Vietnamese women who were sold as brides to Chinese farmers were rescued by Chinese police in February last year and 75 suspects linked to the trafficking ring were arrested. Human traffickers in China are punished severely, with the death penalty being a possible punishment.
