Volcano erupts found in Iceland following weeks of seismic activity
A good volcano in south-west Iceland erupted on Friday, pursuing thousands of smaller sized earthquakes in the region in recent weeks.

The eruption occurred near Fagradalsfjall, a mountain on the Reykjanes Peninsula, around 30 kilometers south-west of the capital Reykjavík.

Pictures on local mass media showed a bright-red evening sky. A picture submitted on Twitter by the Icelandic Meteorological Workplace showed smoke increasing from glowing lava streams.

"I can start to see the glowing crimson sky from my screen," said Rannveig Gudmundsdottir, a resident of the city of Grindavik, only 8km from the eruption.

"Everyone here is engaging in their cars to drive up there," she explained.

The eruption posed no immediate threat to persons in Grindavik or even to critical infrastructure, the IMO said.

"I think we couldn't expect anything much better than that," IMO volcanic hazards co-ordinator Sara Barsotti said.

All inbound and outbound flights at Keflavik AIRPORT TERMINAL, which serves Reykjavík, have already been halted.

Unlike the Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption this year 2010, which halted approximately 900,000 flights and forced hundreds of Icelanders from their homes, this eruption isn't expected to spew very much ash or smoke cigarettes in to the atmosphere, the IMO stated.

The Krysuvik volcanic system is located south of Fagradalsfjall on the Reykjanes peninsula.

Iceland's Department of Crisis Management said it was not anticipating evacuations for the reason that volcano is in a remote control valley, about 2.5km from the nearest road.

Iceland is located along with the Eurasian and the UNITED STATES tectonic plates, which makes it a good seismic and volcanic hotspot while the two plates move around in opposite directions.

The Fagradals volcano have been dormant for 6,000 years, and the Reykjanes Peninsula hadn’t seen an eruption in 781 years.
