White House notifies Congress of plans to sign trade deal with Mexico, possibly Canada
01 September, 2018
The White House on Friday informed Congress it intends to sign a new free trade deal with Mexico and possibly Canada within 90 days.
While no deal was finalized with Canada on a rewrite of the North American Free Trade Agreement, US Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said talks with officials from Ottawa — which were “constructive” and “made progress” — will continue next week.
“Today the president notified the Congress of his intent to sign a trade agreement with Mexico — and Canada, if it is willing — 90 days from now,” Lighthizer said in a statement.
He said the agreement will have “huge benefits for our workers, farmers, ranchers, and businesses.”
