Windows Update For The Worst Security Bug In History Is Crashing The PCs It's Supposed To Fix
Despite initially scrambling to update its Windows operating system after the discovery of the Meltdown and Spectre processor flaws in December, Microsoft is now halting the distribution of update patches to some older AMD-powered computers and servers.
Why? Because the update is crashing the PC's it's supposed to fix. Hilarious!
PC users with older AMD processors began complaining earlier this week that heir computer weren’t booting up after the patch, a problem AMD has now acknowledged. It appears the issue is AMD’s documentation is the problem here.
“Microsoft has reports of customers with some AMD devices getting into an unbootable state after installing recent Windows operating system security updates,” a Microsoft spokesperson said. “After investigating, Microsoft has determined that some AMD chipsets do not conform to the documentation previously provided to Microsoft to develop the Windows operating system mitigations to protect against the chipset vulnerabilities known as Spectre and Meltdown.”
As a result, AMD PCs are not receiving the crucial update anymore, in order to stop bricking any more of them, and Microsoft is working with the chip manufacturer to resolve the issue. In the meantime, affected owners will need to visit Microsoft’s support site to restore their unbootable systems.
“AMD is aware of an issue with some older generation processors following installation of a Microsoft security update that was published over the weekend,” an AMD spokesperson told The Verge. “AMD and Microsoft have been working on an update to resolve the issue and expect it to begin rolling out again for those impacted shortly.”
