Xiaomi smartphone sales slip in first quarter
05 May, 2019
Xiaomi’s smartphone sales volume decreased by 10.2% year on year to 25 million units in the first quarter amid a 6.6% drop in global smartphone sales, according to data from IDC.
Xiaomi’s marketshare for the first quarter fell by 0.4 ppt year on year, but increased 0.4 ppt on the quarter. The company has seen negative growth of smartphone sales for three consecutive quarters, raising concerns.
According to its annual results released earlier, data for the fourth quarter last year was about 25 million units, down 3.5 million units from a year ago, and 8.3 million units from the third quarter last year.
Zhou Shouzi, Xiaomi’s senior vice president and chief financial officer, downplayed the results, saying that the drop in sales was mainly due to a strategic transformation toward higher-end models, as it only launched its flagship Mix3 model during the period.
Among all major smartphone makers, Apple reported a 30.2% decline in sales volume to 36.4 million units in the first quarter, while Huawei and Vivo saw their smartphone sales increase from a year ago.
