What Referee Said To Salah In AFCON Final
08 February, 2022
South African referee Victor Gomes was involved in a heated yet humorous exchange with Egypt captain Mohamed Salah in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations. Here is what reportedly happened.
The 29-year-old was on the losing side in Yaounde on Sunday night, when Egypt lost to Senegal in a penalty shootout after the game ended 0-0 in extra-time.
Salah cut a frustrated figure for most of the evening at the Paul Biya Stadium, particularly during a first-half interaction with match official Gomes as he protested a yellow card that one of his teammates had received. The Egyptian, captain of the side, approached the Johannesburg-born referee but was met by a headstrong Gomes, who sarcastically offered Salah his cards and whistle before reportedly asking him, according to Planet Football: "Do you want to referee?"
As the game progressed, the Liverpool superstar became more and more annoyed as Egypt struggled to come up with potential match-winning chances.
In the penalty shootout that ensued, Salah did not get to attempt an effort from 12 yards as the match was decided before his turn came around, with the forward appearing to have been assigned to the fifth-taker role.
