Pitso's Al Ahly To Break World Record
05 January, 2022
Egyptian giants Al Ahly, managed by former Mamelodi Sundowns boss Pitso Mosimane, are gearing up to break a world record ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup next month.
The tournament will be held in the United Arab Emirates in February, with the Red Devils among the high-profile teams competing for the main prize.
Auckland City had initially been set to challenge in the Club World Cup, but the New Zealand-based club have withdrawn from participating due to Covid-19 travel restrictions.
This means Mosimane’s Ahly will become the team with the most appearances in the competition when they face Monterrey on 5 February, with the African giants currently level on 15 games with Auckland City.
Media Manager of Auckland City Gordon Watson said: COVID-19 pandemic travel restrictions was the reason behind the withdrawal, the quarantine made it difficult for us to show up for the tournament," he told Al Mahwar TV channel.
"We can play matches and travel normally, but the problem is to return back to New Zealand, we will be forced to quarantine for a long time, which led us to withdraw from the tournament, it’s a great loss and we know that.
"Al Ahly breaking our record is a great honor for us, they are great team that have won many domestic and African trophies."
