Bayern Munich have one foot in the next round of the UEFA Champions League after thrashing Chelsea 3-0 at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.

After playing a big role in the win over Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend, Olivier Giroud, Ross Barkley and Marcos Alonso maintained their spot in the starting line-up.

The Bavarians looked the liveliest in the early stages of the contest, with Robert Lewandowski and Kingsley Coman going close to breaking the deadlock in the opening 15 minutes.

While Chelsea struggled to conjure up anything going forward, they remained vulnerable at the back but goalkeeper Willy Caballero was on hand to make a couple crucial saves to deny Lewandowski.

Frank Lampard's troops had to wait until the final five minutes of the first half for an effort at goal as Alonso saw his grass-cutting strike turned away by Manuel Neuer, while full-back headed wide from the resultant corner.

The deadlock was eventually broken five minutes into the second half as Serge Gnabry, who had a quiet first half, exchanged passes with Lewandowski before slotting into an empty net from six-yards out.

It was 2-0 in a matter of minutes as Gnabry and Lewandowski combined once again to good effect, with the former completing his brace with a well-struck effort into the far corner.

Lampard responded with a double change on the hour mark as Giroud and Barkley made way for Tammy Abraham and Willian as the hosts looked to get back in the contest.

However, it was the Bavarians who got the next goal as the influential Alphonso Davies paraded down the left flank before picking out Lewandowski who tapped into an unguarded net in the 75th minute.

The night got worse for the Blues, who were reduced to 10 men in the final seven minutes as Alonso was shown straight red card for an off-the-ball incident with Lewandowski after a review from the Video Assistant Referee.

The visitors were unable to add to their tally in the latter stages of the second half, but Chelsea are still left with a huge task to overturn three-goal deficit in Munich.
