Result: Newcastle United 1-0 Chelsea
Date: 18 January 2020
Venue: St James' Park
Newcastle United struck in the dying stages of the second half to secure a 1-0 a win over Chelsea at St James' Park on Saturday evening.
Blues manager Frank Lampard made only one change as N'Golo Kante returned at the expense of Ross Barkley while Newcastle made a number of changes with the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Jetro Willems recalled but the Longstaff brothers, Matthew and Sean were on the bench.
After a slow opening, the Magpies almost went ahead in the 21st minute after Joelinton connected well with Emil Krafth's cross but his header came off the woodwork.
Chelsea were also denied by the crossbar on 30 minutes after Tammy Abraham flicked Kante's headed throught ball over United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
Dubravka himself denied the visitors the lead with ten minutes remaining of the first stanza, keeping out Kante's low drive at the near post after the French midfielder burst into the area with pace, while Mason Mount nodded over the crossbar minutes later.
The Blues continued to create chances early in the second stanza but they were not clinical enough as Abraham was sent through at the near post but he fired his strike over the bar.
Lampard made his first change with 22 minutes remaining, as he brought on Barkley in place of Mount while Steve Bruce made a tactical change moments later by bringing on Sean Longstaff for Krafth.
The game was opening up in the tail end but it was Bruce's troops who snatched the winner deep in stoppage time courtesy of Isaac Hayden's header on the far post from Allan Saint-Maximin's cross.
