Bill and Melinda Gates announce divorce after 27 years
Bill and Melinda Gates announced on Monday on Twitter they have decided to divorce.

The couple have already been married for 27 years and also have three children together.

Mr Gates, who cofounded Microsoft and is among the wealthiest people on the globe, and his wife established the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a good philanthropic organisation that has built contributions to fighting poverty and disease.

"After a lot of thought and lots of focus on our relationship, we've made the decision to get rid of our marriage," the couple wrote found in identical tweets on their personal Twitter accounts.

"We no longer believe we can grow together as a good couple in this subsequent phase of our lives."

They'll continue to interact at the foundation, which has focused on bettering global health, combating climate change and bolstering US education, the pair said in the statement.

The two have been active through the entire Covid-19 pandemic in encouraging the advancement of vaccines with grants and publicly abiding by health safety precautions.

Through their foundation, which Mr Gates has fully focused on after stepping from day-to-day operations at Microsoft, the couple has distributed a lot more than $50 billion. The building blocks also currently offers over $51bn in assets, relating to a tax submitting cited by CNBC.

The news quickly captured attention on social media since it follows the 2019 divorce of Amazon leader Jeff Bezos and MacKenzie Scott.

Ms Scott has truly gone on to pursue philanthropic work and remarry.

At stake may be the world’s fourth-biggest fortune, currently valued at $145.8bn, in line with the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The Gates’s wealth could prove more complex to carve up compared to the Bezos fortune, that was largely concentrated in Amazon stock.

The financial information on the decision weren't immediately clear. It couldn't be decided if the two got signed a prenuptial agreement.

The former couple met in New York in the 1980s, early into Melinda’s time as something supervisor at Microsoft, before they wedded in Hawaii in 1994.

“We ask for space and privacy for us as we get started to navigate this new lease of life," they said in their statement.
