BMW Drivers Suffer Another Recall
26 December, 2018
Owners of BMWs in Korea will have to visit service centers again due to another recall over a faulty intake manifold.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport on Tuesday confirmed that the cause of spontaneous BMW engine fires was defects in the exhaust gas recirculation system. The ministry found that the carmaker tried to hide or downplay the defects, leading to the additional recall.
Deposits accumulated in the EGR system and the connected intake manifold due to a coolant leak, creating sparks that caused the engine to catch fire.
The ministry said, "If the intake manifold is polluted or physically damaged, it must be replaced after inspection. BMW checked and replaced engine valves in North America after cars whose EGR modules had been replaced caught fire in October."

BMW recalled 106,317 cars in August in Korea and another 65,763 in October over the EGR defect, but now owners will have to return service center again for another checkup.
BMW fires are still happening. Another BMW 520d sedan caught a fire on Christmas day as it traveled on a highway in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province.
