Cambodia to manufacture electric-powered auto-rickshaws
17 February, 2021
Cambodia is set to enter the automobile manufacturing industry with locally produced electric powered auto rickshaws, according to a written report found in the Phnom Penh Post which described the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC).
In line with the CDC, it will issue a final registration certificate to Onion Mobility, an area subsidiary of South Korean-owned MVLLABS, the company lurking behind South Korea’s ride-hailing service Tada.
Onion plans to get $20 million within an electric motorbike and auto-rickshaw assembly plant found in the Suvannaphum Particular Economic Zone found in Cambodia’s Kandal province south of Phnom Penh, which is likely to generate 380 jobs due to a start.
The company said it really is now accelerating construction of the production brand for the country’s first locally-assembled electric auto rickshaws and can soon import elements for assembly, mostly from South Korea. However, part of the parts will be locally built, the report noted. Development is likely to commence in early Might.
Onion Mobility’s products will be built with high-powered batteries that must definitely be replaced at charging stations which the company will be setting up. Initially, the driving spectrum will be limited by Phnom Penh, but will be expanded to more provinces immediately after.
If the product proves successful, the company will expand development for export to neighbouring countries, the statement noted.
