Hong Kong arrests 8 even more activists as crackdown on opposition displays zero sign of let-up

Hong Kong police arrested eight extra activists on Tuesday (Dec 8) over anti-federal government protests this past year, the latest move around in a relentless crackdown on opposition forces.
The police didn't identify the people, saying only that they were aged between 24 and 64. Local mass media said previous pro-democracy lawmaker and veteran activist Leung Kwok-hung, known as Long Wild hair, was among those arrested.
The maneuver comes a time after eight people aged between 16 and 34 were arrested, including three on suspicion of violating a sweeping countrywide security legislation, over a brief demonstration at a university campus previous month.
Beijing imposed the legislation on its freest metropolis in June, saying it had been essential to plug gaping holes found in national security defences exposed by weeks of sometimes violent anti-government and anti-China protests that rocked the town over the last year.
Regulations punishes what Beijing broadly defines as secession, subversion, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces with up alive in jail.
Opposition politicians and Western governments fear the law has been used to suppress dissent and erode wide-ranging freedoms guaranteed to the past British colony when it returned to Chinese guideline in 1997.
On Monday, america announced even more sanctions to punish Beijing for imposing the law on Hong Kong, escalating tensions between the two sides.
